Umrah is a deeply spiritual journey and a moment of devotion for every Muslim. It is a journey where every step brings a sense of closeness to Allah. But alongside spiritual preparation, practical planning is equally important to ensure a smooth experience. In order to make this spiritual journey easy, you must follow an Umrah preparation checklist. This checklist has a few key things that every pilgrim should consider:Â
- A valid UK passportÂ
- Saudi eVisa through the Nusuk App
- Vaccination certificates, such as the ACWY meningitis vaccine
- Confirmation of your hotels in Makkah and Madinah
- Travel insurance ready
- Appropriate clothing
- Spiritual essentials such as prayer beads or a dua bookÂ
This combination of thoughtful preparation and practical items will guide you to travel confidently and worship wholeheartedly without worrying about anything. In this blog, we have explained everything that you must make a part of your Umrah packing list.Â
Pre-Travel Preparation 6-8 Weeks Before Departure
Umrah preparation begins 6 to 8 weeks before departure and focuses on both spiritual and practical readiness. Early preparation ensures a smooth and meaningful pilgrimage. For pre-travel preparation, you can follow the points mentioned below:Â
Umrah Documents Checklist   Â
Documents are one of the crucial parts of your Umrah travel essentials. Missing or incorrect documents can result in denied boarding. So make sure you have the following documents with you while travelling:Â
- A UK passport that must be valid for 6 months from your date of travelÂ
- Saudi eVisa applied via the Nusuk app
- Digital and printed copies of ticketsÂ
- Hotel booking for Makkah and MadinahÂ
- Mandatory ACWY meningitis vaccine certificateÂ
- Travel insurance that covers medical emergencies or repatriationÂ
- Carry at least 4 passport-size photos
- Passport photocopyÂ
- Emergency contact lists, such as those of your group leader, the UK consulate in Saudi Arabia, and the hotel numberÂ
- Full travel itinerary with all transport connectionsÂ
The best thing you can do is to keep a printed and cloud-backed digital copy of every document, such as in Google Drive or iCloud. Share these digital copies with a trusted family member at home in the UK. Keep in mind that the Saudi authorities will take your passport upon arrival and return it on departure. This is a normal procedure, so you do not need to worry about this. As a precautionary measure, you can keep the duplicate printed copy and digital copy of your passport with you.Â
The Nusuk App
The Nusuk App, launched by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, is now the primary platform for managing your Umrah digitally. UK pilgrims should download and set it up well before travel. The Nusuk app allows you:
- Apply and manage your Saudi eVisa
- Book your Tawaf and prayer time slots at Masjid al-Haram
- Access digital maps of Makkah and Madinah
- Receive official updates and notifications from Saudi authorities
- Store your pilgrimage records
The Nusuk app is one of the essential parts of modern Umrah. Without this app, you may not get access to certain Haram areas during peak hours. You can read our guide on How to get your Umrah visa in 2026 for a better understanding of the visa application through the Nusuk app.Â
Vaccinations Required Before Umrah from the UK
Vaccination is one of the most important things that you must never neglect if you are travelling internationally. In Saudi Arabia, there are certain vaccinations without which you can not even apply for the Visa. The mandatory vaccination is:
ACWY Meningococcal Meningitis Vaccine
ACWY vaccination is mandatory for pilgrims coming from all countries. Make sure you have a valid certificate. As a UK pilgrim, you can get a meningococcal vaccination from your general physician, a travel clinic, or a pharmacy. Make sure to get this vaccination at least 2 to 3 weeks before departure.Â
Recommended VaccinesÂ
There are certain vaccinations that are not compulsory but are recommended, considering the pilgrim’s safety. Those vaccinations are:Â
- Yellow fever vaccination is required because in KSA, you may encounter people from yellow fever endemic areas
- The COVID-19 vaccination requirement has been relaxed by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. It is better to check the latest guidance on this. Â
You can take these vaccinations from a general physician, a travel clinic, or pharmacies that offer travel services. It is better to book the vaccination at least 6 to 8 weeks before your departure to ensure your vaccine certifications are ready in time. Read our blog on Vaccinations required before travel and get a thorough understanding of Umrah vaccines.Â
The Complete Umrah Packing List Â
In addition to the documents, a pilgrim also needs certain day-to-day essentials. These things can be the same or different for both men and women. Such as:Â
Ihram Clothing Â
The Ihram garment is an extremely essential thing that you must pack in the bag that is accessible to you at the time of travelling. As we know, Ihram is different for men and women. So while packing, keep in mind the following:Â
For Men
For men, the Ihram is a set of two unstitched white sheets. An upper garment called Rida and a lower garment called Izhar are part of men’s Ihram. Avoid packaging thin clothing as it may become uncomfortable when wet due to sweating. A medium-weight cotton, towelling material, or terry cloth is the best option. Always pack a second set of Ihram in case the first one gets impure. Also, keep with you:
- Safety pins or Ihram clips to secure the upper garment at the shoulder so it does not slip
- When you are wearing Ihram, your ankles and the top of your foot must remain uncovered. So keep sandals with you that are flat and comfortable.Â
- A waist pouch or money belt is also essential to secure a passport, cash, or other important documents.Â
For Women
Women can wear the regular, modest and loose-fitting garments. There is no specific garment requirement in women’s Ihram. Besides clothing, women need to have a hijab or extra scarves. Modest and comfortable footwear. Females can choose thin gloves and an abaya as per their convenience.Â
There are certain things that men and women both must have for a better and more comfortable journey:Â
-
- Comfortable Shoes: Comfortable walking shoes and trainers when they are not in the state of Ihram. A pilgrim has to cover long distances daily, so comfortable footwear is a must.
- Shoes Bags: Shoe bags or a string bag will work the best when you enter Haramain. You can place your footwear inside that bag and carry it with you because shoes left on racks can disappear.Â
-  Jacket or Hoodie: If you are travelling in winters then keep a light jacket or hoodie with you, as the temperature in Madinah drops to 17°C in the evening around December.Â
- Socks: The marble floor in Haram is quite cold during Fajr, so keep socks as well.Â
- Sunglasses: The Saudi sun reflects intensely off the white marble. This can cause discomfort for those with sensitive eyes. So keep sunglasses with you.Â
- Folding Umbrella: Buy a white umbrella to cover yourself in the intense midday sun. Avoid black and pointed umbrellas as black absorbs heat and pointed umbrellas can injure fellow pilgrims.Â
- Small Daily Backpack: This will help you carry water bottles, prayer mats, phones, dua books, etc, during trips to Haram.Â
Fragrance Free Toiletries and Hygiene Products
All products used in the state of Ihram must be fragrance-free. Soaps, shampoos, conditioners, moisturisers, lip balms, and sunscreens all come under fragrance-free products. If you violate this, you may invalidate your Ihram. In your toiletries checklist, you can keep:Â
- Toothbrush and toothpaste Â
- MiswakÂ
- Shampoo and conditioner Â
- Unscented bar soap or liquid body wash
- Anti-bacterial hand sanitiser Â
- Fragrance-free deodorant or antiperspirant Â
- Hairbrush or comb that is also used outside the state of IhramÂ
- Disposable razors or a shaving machine in checked luggageÂ
- Nail clippers and small scissors shall also be packed in check in luggageÂ
- TowelsÂ
- Toilet rolls and pocket tissues
- Fragrance-free wet wipes Â
- Small mirror
- Toiletries bag Â
- Suction hooks to hang Ihram in bathroom cubiclesÂ
You can buy an Ihram Safe toiletries kit from several UK Islamic stores and online retailers. They ensure that everything is in the Ihram, so you do not have to struggle finding individual items.Â
Medications to Pack for Umrah
Saudi Arabia is a hot and densely crowded environment. There are high chances of infestation, stomach upset, and blistered feet during Umrah. So come prepared with the following medications:Â Â
- Current or regular prescribed medication Â
- Cold and flu relief Â
- Pain relief tablets Â
- Travel sickness tabletsÂ
- Antihistamines Â
- Diarrhoea tablets Â
- Oral rehydration salts Â
- Plasters and blister plasters Â
- Vaseline or unscented barrier cream Â
- Fragrance-free moisturising creamÂ
- Fragrance-free lip balm Â
- Fragrance-free sunscreenÂ
- Throat lozenges and cough syrup
- Vitamin C supplements Â
- Glucose tablets or powder Â
- Bandages and antiseptic wipes
- Muscle pain ointment Â
Most of these over-the-counter medicines are available in Makkah and Madinah, but the prices are high. So it is better to bring yours from the UK than to pay high prices and waste a lot of time searching for medication.Â
Prayer Essentials
You will find almost everything in the mosques. But if you bring yours, then it will be better as you can remain seated without losing your spot. At the time of Sa’i and Tawaf, your personal prayer essentials will benefit you a lot. The prayer essentials are:Â
- Pocket QuranÂ
- A Dua book with transliteration and translationÂ
- Personal dua listÂ
- Tasbeeh or prayer beads, or a digital dhikr counterÂ
- Seven-bead tasbeeh Â
- Foldable travel prayer mat Â
- Qibla compass for prayer direction during travelÂ
- Umrah guidebookÂ
Electronics and Tech
Your tech essentials will make your whole journey far easier than you think. You can join WhatsApp groups for coordination; you do not have to worry about mobile discharge if you bring power banks and so on. Ensure you have kept the following with you:Â
- Universal travel adapterÂ
- Mobile phone and charger
- Portable power bank
- Saudi SIM card or eSIMÂ
- E-reader or tablet  Â
- Earphones or headphones
- Digital travel luggage scale that will help you while packingÂ
Baggage
Keep with you a good quality hardshell suitcase with built in lock. Avoid bringing soft vinyl briefcases that can be cut open. You shall also have:
- Suitcase locks and keys Â
- Luggage tags Â
- Small daily backpack Â
- Reusable water bottle Â
Other Useful Items
- Pen and markerÂ
- Small notebook
- Travel neck pillow Â
- Ear plugs Â
- Eye mask
- Small water spray bottle Â
- Foldable wudhu jug Â
- Small Zamzam bottle Â
- Non-perishable snacks Â
- String and pegs Â
- Small resealable bags Â
Seasonal Packing Â
If you are travelling between September and February, then you may have to see temperature contrast. The temperature in daytime can reach 28 – 34°C, while in Madinah it can drop to 17 °C. So you must consider a smart layering approach:
- Light thermal base layersÂ
- Modest thermal leggings under abayas for women
- Lightweight hoodie or jacket for both
- Soft padded socks for cold marble floors during Fajr
- Shawl or blanket for elderly pilgrims at early morning prayers
Special Needs For Families and Elderly Pilgrims
Travelling with family or an elderly pilgrim can be slightly challenging. Because during peak times, it is quite difficult to remain side by side, and the chances of children getting lost are quite high. That is why you must pack:Â
- ID wristbands or tags with emergency contact information on children’s clothing
- Bring child-specific medications Â
- Set daily meeting points within the Haram in case of separation
- Pack familiar snacks to comfort children during long waiting periods
Elderly Pilgrims
- Carry a printed card in both English and Arabic with your name, hotel address, group leader’s number, and any medical conditions.
- Ensure wheelchair access, as many hotels near the Haram offer wheelchair assistance or rentals.
- Bring a warm blanket or shawl for cool night prayers
- Ensure all medications are clearly labelled with dosage instructions
- Inform your group leader of any health conditions before departure
What Not to PackÂ
Sometimes, pilgrims end up packing things that are not required or are not allowed by the customs officers. Bringing non-essentials will only add extra weight to your baggage. So avoid packing too many clothes, as there are laundry services in every hotel. Just bring 3 to 4 items of clothing alongside the Ihram. Do not bring scented toiletries and sharp items, especially in hand baggage. Your power banks must also be in hand luggage as per aviation safety regulations. No expensive jewellery, watches, or formal wear is required.Â

A holy pilgrimage is worth anything in the world. Practical preparation is an essential part of making your journey easy and comfortable.
